What is a Triathlon??!!

  • A triathlon is an event with 3 parts.  The participant swims, transitions to a bike, and then transitions to a run.  At the Just Tri It, the distances of each part will vary with the age of the participant.  Details can be found HERE.

Do you need special skills to participate?

  • Only one:  The ability to HAVE FUN!  Seriously, this un-timed event is designed to be achievable by any skill level.  If you have any questions or if you have a special needs child that you feel will require assistance, please contact us- we want to try and accommodate any child who desires to Just Tri It!

top

Who can participate?

  • Anyone, from age 5 through 13 years.

top

How do I prepare for a triathlon?

  • Practice!  No, this doesn't take planning, a whistle or a clipboard; make it spontaneous and fun!  Hop on your bike and take it for a few rides (remember your helmet and practice bike safety on the roads).  Chase after your sister/brother/family pet whatever motivates you to get those legs moving.  Summer is perfect for swimming.  Grab some friends and spend time at the pool.  You don't have to swim laps to be successful in the Tri, but it will help if you are comfortable in the water.

Do I get a medal?

webdone3

  • YES!!!  Your goal is to finish.  To prove to yourself that you CAN do this.  Everyone that finishes the event gets a medal!

top

Is there anything else fun going on after the Tri?

  • Of course!!  Stick around and enjoy the post Tri food, music and door prizes!  Every registered participant is in the running for door prizes and a few grand prize drawings too!!  You must be present to win!!

As a parent, can I help my child?

  • Parents are not allowed on the course or in the transition areas once the event has started (see exception below).  Our wonderful lifeguards, volunteers and event staff will help them find equipment, show them where to go and help if they are in a jam.
  • EXCEPTION!  An additional wristband will be included in each 5-7 year old packet.  This can be worn by ONE parent and will grant that parent access to the transition areas.  Parents may want to assist with tying shoes, mount / dismount bike, putting on and taking off helmets, drying feet and putting on clothes after the swim, etc.  Parents cannot; however, help their child with the actual events.  Please see Course/Map for additional transition information.
  • If you have a child with special needs in another age group whom you feel would require your assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact us before the event.

top

Can I see or try the course before event day?

  • Yes, Some kids are more comfortable if they have a chance to see or experience the course before the event.  So, take a look at the course maps and the transition areas; it will help you feel like you know what’s going on before you get there.  If you feel as though you'd like to try out the course on the Tri morning, please be aware: If you ride any portion of the route prior to the start, use extreme caution!  Route will not close to traffic and will not be monitored until event starts at 9:15.

Are life jackets and training wheels allowed?

  • Yes! Training wheels, life jackets and kick boards are allowed. weblifejacket

Do I have to have a waiver signed?

  • YES.  A parent or guardian must be present to sign a waiver for you to participate.  This must be signed prior to packet pick-up. The nice packet people will ask for this waiver in exchange for the goody bag.

Where and when do I pick up my triathlon packet?

  • Great Question! Packet Pick-up will begin at 8:00 am, August 14th and will be located next to the entrance doors to the Trempealeau Pool.
  • See the Event Day Info for more details on what will happen that day.
  • Remember, Parents MUST be present and sign the release waiver prior to packet pick up.

What is body marking and can I do it??!!

  • YES!!!  After all, this is part of the fun!! Body marking will occur after registration.  Your bib number (remeber, this is pinned to your shirt by your bike!) and heat will be marked on your body, it will identify your bib number and wave number.  That's how we know who you are in the pool and when you begin your wave!

How do I transition from the swim to the bike and the bike to the run?

  • The Swim / Bike transition area will be grouped by age; Towels, shoes, socks, clothes; and riding gear will be arranged in front of your bike.
  • Please NO parents in the transition areas after the Tri has started, our wonderful volunteers will help them find equipment and show them where to go. (See exception for 5-7 and special needs)
  • When leaving the transition area, you must walk your bike to the exit.  Volunteers will check for tight laces and secure helmets.
  • When Entering the Bike / Run transition area, you will be asked to dismount at the entrance and push your bike to a volunteer. Volunteers will take your bike, helmet and any other equipment for you.
  • Volunteers will line bikes up for pick-up after the race.  Please bring your race number so we can match it to your bike!

top

What if I'm nervous?

  • It's perfectly normal to be nervous or have butterflies before the event.  You aren’t alone; others most likely feel the same way.  (Even the “big kids” a.k.a adults, get butterflies before a race!).  Just remember this is only about you!  Take a breath, take your time and go at your pace!  Your butterflies will go away and be replaced by excitement about what you are doing!!

top

I'm afraid I'll get lost!

  • The course will be well marked with cones, paint, flags and volunteers.  We won’t let you get lost!

top

What if I get tired?

  • That's ok!  If you become tired during the swim, change your stroke (dogpaddle, crawl, breast stroke - whatever you want!), walk if it's shallow, go ahead and hold on to the lane line or take a breather at the end of a lap. If you tire during the bike portion, simply take your bike to the grass area near a volunteer and take a breather.  Get back on and go when you're ready!  If you tire during the run, walk!  Remember, you've already completed two events, you're bound to be tired!  You're almost done though, so keep going!

top

Will my legs feel funny when I get to the run portion?

  • When you start the run, your legs may feel wobbly from the bike. This is mostly due to using a different set of muscles.  DON’T PANIC!  Simply take shorter strides until your legs adjust.

top

When I start running, should I run fast?

  • That's probably not a good idea.  You'll want to pace yourself on the run so you have enough energy to finish.  Parents, we know our youngest athletes are full of energy and often sprint when they start the run.  You can help them understand how to start easy and still have energy for the finish.

top

What if the weather is bad?

  • Don't worry, if it rains, the event will still go on (and is maybe even more fun!).  In the event of severe weather (thunder/lightning), the tri will be delayed. In the event of all day severe weather, for everyone's safety, the event will be cancelled.  This will only be determined on event day.

top

Where should my parents park?

  • Please see Directions/parking for instructions on where to park.  For safety reasons, we are requesting that no one park in the pool parking lot or along the route.

top

Can I bring my pet?

  • Please make sure your pets are comfortable at home.  We love them too but due to the nature of the event, we ask that you DO NOT BRING PETS to the Triathlon.  Thank you!

top

Can spectators bring anything?

  • You may wish to bring snacks, chairs, umbrellas, sun screen or other items to make your cheering section comfortable.  We ask that the post-Tri food & drink be reserved for the athletes only.  Thank you for your understanding.

top

Where can I get photos of the Tri?

  • We will have amateur photographers on site.  We do our very best to get many photos of all of our participants.  (Be sure to bring your own camera too!).  You will find our photos of this event and all other Off n' Funning/Community Kids G.O. events HERE.
